Klopp urges Liverpool fans to give 'old friend' Benitez a warm welcome

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hopes an "old friend" receives a warm reception Saturday when Rafa Benitez returns to Anfield as Newcastle United manager.

Benitez, who led Liverpool to Champions League glory during its miraculous comeback win over AC Milan in the 2005 final in Istanbul, continues to be an adored figure at the club, and was treated to a positive reaction upon his return to Anfield in 2013 when he was in charge of Chelsea.

"I know him, I like Rafa. We met each other a few times at UEFA meetings, he is a very successful manager, nice person, and I really like him," Klopp told reporters.

"From my point of view, if somebody wants to celebrate Rafa Benitez and memories of the Istanbul game or whatever - (he's) one of the most successful managers at Liverpool - they're very welcome.

"If they want (to), do it. Be louder than you have ever been, that's absolutely okay. That's how I would say hello to a good old friend, so if you want to do this nobody has to ignore this wonderful moment only because I'm here now."

Even though Newcastle occupies one of three relegation places, Klopp admits he's been impressed by the team's form despite its struggles.

"They don't look like a relegation team but that shows how strong this league is. When you are in the wrong direction, it's pretty difficult to change this direction.

"Now you see, (it's) unbelievable, but only one of Norwich, Sunderland and Newcastle can stay in the league.

Klopp will look to lead his club to its fourth straight Premier League win Saturday, with hopes of avoiding another disappointing result against the Magpies after dropping the first match of the season 2-0 at St James' Park.
