Porto offers 1-year contract extension to goalkeeper Casillas

Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been offered a one-year contract extension, according to the club's president.

A Spanish report had suggested that Jorge Pinto da Costa had labelled the Casillas signing as a "complete fiasco," but Da Costa has swiftly denied those accusations, and revealed that the Spanish international has received an offer from the Portuguese outfit to extend his stay through the 2017-18 season.

"We reached an agreement with the agent that represents the player in order to extend the contract with Casillas for another year, after the next one," Da Costa told Porto's official website. "Now it's on him to decide. The deal is done on our end, we told them to sign whenever they want to."

El Confidencial carried quotes from Da Costa earlier this week that showed a man privately upset with Casillas. He reportedly blamed several of Porto's losses on Casillas and claimed his salary was "unaffordable."

None of that prompted the club to make this announcement, according to Da Costa. Instead, he sees the report as ploy to unsettle the 34-year-old goalkeeper.

"It may be an issue for some in Spain, for those responsible for him leaving Real Madrid, that Casillas might be the captain and the starting goalkeeper of the Spanish team, and, who knows, maybe even win another international trophy," Da Costa said.

Porto is currently in third place in the Primeira Liga, six points behind leader and arch-rival Benfica.
