Iker Casillas makes 152nd Champions League appearance, breaks Xavi's all-time record

Step aside, Xavi. The Champions League has a new king (of appearances).

FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas made his 152nd appearance in Europe's most prestigious club competition on Tuesday, surpassing the former Barcelona icon to stand alone in the record book.

The 34-year-old shot-stopper, who spent 16 glittering seasons with Real Madrid - where 150 of those Champions League appearances were made - set the new benchmark, coincidentally, against Chelsea and manager Jose Mourinho, the very man who tried to bury him on the bench while the two worked together at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Casillas, 34, tied the all-time record in Porto's 2-2 draw against Dynamo Kiev earlier this month - his first Champions League match with the club. He made his first-ever appearance in the tournament all the way back on Sept. 15, 1999, when, as an 18-year-old, Casillas played in a 3-3 draw against Olympiacos.

With Xavi now plying his trade with Qatari side Al Sadd, the Spanish netminder will be able to not only surpass his compatriot, but extend his lead atop the all-time tournament caps list.

"Iker and I have shared everything since everything since we were 16, 17," Xavi said earlier in the month, prior to Casillas equalling the appearance record. "Him at Real Madrid, our all-time rival, and me at Barcelona. It's a privilege to have him as a colleague, friend and role model."
