Turkish official Cuneyt Cakir to referee Champions League final
We know the teams who will partake in the Champions League final June 6 in Berlin, and we now know the man in the middle of the pitch whom the 22 players - and millions of supporters worldwide on both sides - will be yelling at for 90 minutes.
Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir will oversee the match between Barcelona and Juventus, UEFA announced Monday.
Cakir, 38, has been an international referee since 2006, and has 70 UEFA matches to his name. That includes four from this season's Champions League, with the first leg of the round-of-16 tie between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea being the standout contest.
As is customary in the Champions League, his officiating team for the match will be comprised primarily of his compatriots. UEFA explains:
Cakir will be assisted by his countrymen Bahattin Duran and Tarik Ongun. The fourth official will be Jonas Eriksson from Sweden, and the two additional assistant referees, Huseyin Gocek and Baris Simsek, are also from Turkey. A Turkish reserve assistant referee - Mustafa Emre Eyisoy - completes the refereeing team.
