Real Madrid's dominating performance against Atletico Madrid goes unrewarded

While the result didn't go in their favour, Real Madrid will take comfort in their impressive performance Tuesday against Atletico Madrid as they take a 0-0 scoreline back the Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg.

While Real controlled the play for much of the match and dominated possession, their failure to convert on several close opportunities will leave the players feeling luck was on Atletico Madrid's side, especially with the outstanding performance of their in-form 'keeper, Jan Oblak.

It could have been a lopsided result for the visitors if not for Oblak's otherworldly performance that prevented a scoreline similar to Atletico's 4-0 Madrid derby victory in February at the Vicente Calderon.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Mario Mandzukic got the game off to a heated start when he was cautioned early for a dangerous challenge after his high boot appeared to catch Sergio Ramos' head.
  • Moments later, Real Madrid got their best chance for a goal thanks to Diego Godin's horrific giveaway, that allowed Gareth Bale to go through on goal, alone, within the opening five minutes. However, Bale would become Oblak's first victim when the Welsh international's close-range effort was swatted away.

  • Real continued to put pressure on Atletico's back line, but attempts on goal primarily occurred from long distance and rarely looked likely to get past Oblak.
  • Bale went on to do his part to make an impact in the heated rivalry when he challenged Juanfran for the ball as he rolled towards the touchline. The Real Madrid superstar delivered a crushing hit that sent Juanfran flying to the ground before the two exchanged words.
  • Real was oozing confidence 30 minutes into the clash. Their imaginative play and intricate passing was almost unstoppable, leading to a massive possession advantage and frustrating the hosts as they tirelessly attempted to fight for the ball.
  • James Rodriguez came close to breaking the deadlock following Real's corner kick when his effort with the outside of his boot was cleverly knocked away by Oblak.

  • Oblak put in a man-of-the-match performance through 45 minutes. The Slovenian kept his side in the game after making several saves in the half, most of which were quality chances that inferior 'keepers would struggle to make.

Second Half

  • There was a bloody start to the second frame after Mandzukic caught an elbow to the face, leaving the Croatian international with blood pouring from his forehead.
  • The rough play continued minutes later when Dani Carvajal delivered a body blow to Mandzukic while the two jostled for position inside the box.

  • While chances were few and far between, Real continued to enjoy the majority of efforts on goal. Atletico, however, did a terrific job of limiting space for Real's attackers, forcing them to make long-range efforts that were no match for Oblak.
  • Momentum finally shifted in Atletico's favour with a majority of the game's late chances taking place in the Real area. Their ability to limit Cristiano Ronaldo, as they did in February, appeared to be working as the 2014 Ballon d'Or winner was a non-factor for a majority of the second half, a frame Ronaldo has struggled to find his rhythm in during the tournament.
  • Then Vicente Calderon erupted with less than five minutes remaining after appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears. As Fernando Torres cut into the box, his run was cut short when Ramos smartly cut off his path and subsequently sent Torres to the ground.
  • Seconds later, Torres was wreaking havoc again in the box when his aerial challenge caught Casillas off balance, with the ball eventually going out for a corner. The pressure, however, didn't stop as Manduzkic unleashed a powerful close-range shot that failed to get past a Real defender willing to sacrifice his torso to stop the effort. It was the final chance for a goal by either side, with the final whistle sounding off for a rare, Madrid derby draw.
