A match that had its fair share of controversial moments and heated exchanges saw Bayer Leverkusen drop last year's finalists Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their round-of-16 Champions League clash at BayArena.
Here's what you need to know:
- After notching a goal in Leverkusen's Bundesliga draw at Augsburg on Saturday, Josip Drmic was inserted into his side's starting XI over Stefan Kiessling.
-
Arda Turan overcame a dead leg to start for Atleti while Raul Jimenez
was placed on the bench after suffering from an illness. - The best chances of the first half were generated by Leverkusen, including two attempts from centre-back Emir Spahic, who saw Mario Mandzukic clear a shot off the goal line in the 13th minute before blasting a 30-yard screamer off the crossbar in the 25th minute.
- Some entertainment on the sidelines was also provided during the first half as managers Roger Schmidt and Diego Simeone exchanged unpleasantries and needed to be separated. So much hair gel.
- Atleti's top opportunity of the first half came just before the interval, when a shot from Tiago was brilliantly saved at the last moment by a diving Bernd Leno.
- Bayer Leverkusen 1, Atletico Madrid 0: Leverkusen's pressure was finally rewarded in the 57th minute, when Hakan Calhanoglu unleashed one of his classic rockets past Miguel Angel Moya from a tight angle after being fed an excellent back-heel pass courtesy of Karim Bellarabi. The goal brought an end to Moya's impressive Champions League streak.
- Fernando Torres finally took the pitch in 64th minute, replacing Turan. It was a bizarre move given Simeone's recent admission that Torres, Mandzukic, and Antoine Griezmann shouldn't all be on the pitch at the same time.
- Torres appeared to have found an equalizer for Atleti when he merely needed to nod the ball over the goal line following a deflection off a corner kick. However, referee Pavel Kralovec ruled that the ball had curled out of bounds on the corner before re-entering the pitch. Replays showed that Kravolec made the wrong call.
- Any chance of Atleti finding an equalizer was essentially thrown away in the 76th minute, when Tiago was shown his second yellow card of the night after a reckless challenge on Bellarabi.
- The second leg of the tie goes on March 17 at the Vicente Calderon.
