Top 5 goals from Matchday 1 of the Champions League

Juan Medina / Reuters

A total of 43 goals were scored across the 16 fixtures that marked the first matchday of the Champions League.

There were screamers. There were phenomenal individual efforts. There were howlers. There were own goals. A whole variety. And since posting each and every goal would be overdoing it, here are top five goals from Matchday 1:

5. Lasse Schoene draws Ajax level against Paris Saint-Germain with beautiful free kick (74th minute)

Ajax were able to salvage a point in their Champions League opener, courtesy of a stunning free kick from Lasse Schone that completely fooled PSG 'keeper Salvatore Sirigu.

Schone has now scored or assisted on four of Ajax's last six goals in the competition.

4. Olympiakos' Arthur Masuaku opens scoring vs. Atletico Madrid from 25 yards out (13th minute)

Olympiakos produced the biggest upset of Matchday 1 by emerging with a 3-2 win over last season's runner-up Atletico Madrid. Kicking off the festivities for the Greek club was left-back Arthur Masuaku, who joined one of Olympiakos' early attacks and proceeded to blast home a left-footed shot from about 25 yards out.

3. Porto's Yacine Brahimi completes hat-trick with precision-perfect free kick (57th minute)

Algerian prodigy Yacine Brahimi made history in Porto's 6-0 trashing of BATE Borisov, becoming the first player in the club's history to notch a hat-trick in the Champions League, as well as the fourth African player ever to do so.

After notching a tight-angle strike in the fifth minute followed and slotting home an excellent individual effort just under half an hour later, Brahimi capped off his hat-trick with a remarkable free kick early in the second half.

2. Borussia Dortmund's Ciro Immobile overwhelms Arsenal with individual run (45th minute)

In a match where Borussia Dortmund reduced Arsenal to tatters, Ciro Immobile gave the German club a 1-0 lead just before the interval after making an incredible individual run from the half-way line, shaking off two Arsenal defenders, and sliding the ball past Wojciech Szczesny. Note that the shot was Dortmund's 15th of the match.

1. Gareth Bale taps ball over goal line after chipping Basel 'keeper Tomas Vaclik (30th minute)

It was raining goals at the Santiago Bernabéu during Real Madrid's 5-1 win over Basel on Tuesday. But one goal in particular stood out. In what was something of a throwback to 2011-12 Tottenham, Luka Modric provided Bale with a slick through ball that the Welshman proceeded to chip over Tomas Vaclik before casually tapping the ball over the goal line.
