Bayern rejected United's £85M offer for Muller, says club official

Manchester United's attempt to acquire Thomas Muller wasn't even considered by Bayern Munich, according to an official from the German outfit.

Soon after manager Jose Mourinho succeeded Louis van Gaal last summer, United reportedly submitted an offer worth £85 million (€100 million) for the German international. But, according to Bayern's executive vice-chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen, the possibility of Muller leaving the Bavarians was never realistically discussed.

"There really was such a thing," Dreesen, who tends to Bayern's finances, said in an interview with Bild, as translated by Sky Sports, when asked about the alleged offer.

"Then came a fax from England. For us, however, a sale of Thomas Muller was never discussed.

"If a player fits us, we would be stupid to give him a short-term prospect of a record profit and to weaken him."

The capture of Muller could have potentially altered United's business on the transfer market, as the English side went on to spend £145 million on Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Eric Bailly. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was also acquired on a free transfer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired.

Meanwhile, a move away from Bayern may seem appealing, in hindsight, considering the difficult year Muller has been forced to withstand as manager Carlo Ancelotti struggles to find a place for the 27-year-old in his system.

The German international has been a spectator for much of the season, starting just 14 of Bayern's opening 20 Bundesliga contests.

Chances of United returning this summer with another offer for Muller appear unlikely, as the English side looks to have turned its attention towards Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.
