Manager Rafa Benitez says Newcastle United is under no obligation to sell Moussa Sissoko amid reported interest from Real Madrid, Juventus, and a host of other clubs.

Following a season which saw him subject of criticism from some sections of the St James' Park support, Sissoko put in some impressive performances during France's Euro 2016 to attract the attentions of numerous sides.

The 26-year-old has made no secret of his desire to leave Tyneside.

"If someone thinks if they will wait until 31 August it will be easier, I can guarantee them it will be more difficult," Benitez warned Sissoko's potential suitors.

"If someone wants to come, they have to come now with the right offer and we will analyse that. If not, he is still our player and he carries on working hard."

Newcastle was relegated from the Premier League last term, and despite almost £50 million being spent on new players, Sissoko won't necessarily be allowed to exit.

In addition to Real Madrid and Juventus, the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Everton are said to be sniffing around the Magpies' prized asset.

Benitez has been left unimpressed with Sissoko's public declarations of wanting a transfer, and has called for the former Toulouse man to remain focused as long as he plies his trade in Newcastle.

"I told Moussa we know how things work in modern football and that is not the right way," said Benitez, who previously managed Real Madrid.

"I said, 'You are a professional, you are our player, I rate you very highly and I like you as a person. Keep working hard and let other people do their business.'"

Newcastle began its Championship season with a 1-0 loss at Fulham, and plays its second match of the campaign against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
