Transfer gossip column: Higuain fancies Liverpool switch

Reuters

This is not the place for legitimate reports and completed deals. Here, we compile the ludicrous transfer rumours that arise during this month of madness in the football world. Each day until the summer transfer window shuts, theScore will provide a rundown of the most outlandish babble from the backpages, briefing you on the transfer gossip throughout Europe.

Here's what the rumour mill is churning out today:

Gonzalo Higuain eyeing Anfield

Napoli's record-breaking striker Gonzalo Higuain is interested in a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window, according to a report from the Mirror. After breaking the Serie A goal-scoring standard with 36 goals in 35 matches, the 28-year-old is forcing his exit from Gli Azzurri.

With two years left on his deal with the club, Higuain - who was bought from Real Madrid for £34.5 million - won't come cheap, though Liverpool may feel compelled to overspend with its rivals all readying to splash the cash this summer.

With Jurgen Klopp poised to overhaul his attack force, starting with Christian Benteke's departure, Higuain would be the perfect fit for Liverpool's return to the Champions League - er, Europa League - er ... Is the Intertoto Cup still a thing?

Besiktas eyeing Arsenal's Ospina

Looking to drive its supporters mad during a 2016-17 Champions League group-stage match, Turkish champ Besiktas is monitoring Arsenal's second-choice 'keeper David Ospina, according to the Mirror.

The Colombian international is best known in north London for a calamitous match against Olympiacos that nearly cost Arsenal a place in the knockout phase. With one foot reportedly out the door, Ospina would be an inexpensive transfer and would likely compete with Tolga Zengin for the No. 1 gig at the Istanbul club.

Celtic wants the 'Welsh Xavi'

Looking to bolster its squad ahead of the 2016-17 seasons, Celtic and new manager Brendan Rodgers have their eyes on Liverpool's Joe "Welsh Xavi" Allen, reports the Daily Record. While Allen's agent insists his client won't come cheap, Rodgers is familiar with his former player, and apparently daft enough to spend £80 million on the pint-sized Swansea product.
