Michael Sam not giving up on football career: 'I'm going to give it one more shot'

Michael Sam still has his sights set on a career in professional football.

The former Missouri standout, who most recently played for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, responded to a Twitter question Tuesday saying that he intends to pursue a job with another team.

Sam became the NFL's first openly gay player when he was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 draft.

Unable to earn a spot on the active roster heading into the regular season, he later caught on with the Dallas Cowboys practice squad before again being released to the open market.

The defensive end signed a two-year deal with the Alouettes ahead of the CFL's 2015 season, but left the team after just one game. He later explained that he intended to return to the NFL the following year, expressing confidence that taking a step back would help him achieve that goal.

"I'll try to pursue my NFL career," Sam said in September. "Taking a break this year was very smart. I think it was one of the smartest things I've done in a long time."

Sam earned SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording an impressive 10 sacks in his senior season at Missouri.
