CFL Preview - British Columbia (7-5) at Calgary (10-2) (ET)

GAME NOTES: The Calgary Stampeders try to avoid back-to-back defeats for the first time this season as they entertain the British Columbia Lions in a West Division showdown at McMahon Stadium on Saturday night.

Not only is Calgary trying to bounce back from an uncharacteristic 31-15 loss to Montreal on the road last week, the squad is also hoping to exact some revenge against BC, the only other club to defeat the Stamps in 2014.

With Drew Tate at the helm, in place of an injured Bo Levi Mitchell, the Calgary offense struggled on the road against the Als during Week 13 action. After being held scoreless in the first quarter, the Stamps were stumped again in the fourth, after putting up a combined 15 points in the second and third frames.

Tate took it upon himself to do most of the work when it came to putting points on the board, scoring a pair of majors on the ground. Unfortunately, the efforts with his arm were not nearly as fruitful as he converted just half of his 30 attempts for 152 yards, was sacked once and tossed an interception. Tate was also one of three Stamps to fumble the ball, the team losing possession twice.

Somewhat surprising was the fact that kicker Rene Paredes was never even given an opportunity to attempt a field goal in the meeting, an unusual occurrence these days in the CFL.

While the Stamps are still all alone at the top of the West Division standings with the best overall record in the league through 13 weeks of action, British Columbia finds itself now in fourth place in the division, having lost to Toronto last week, 40-23, and having a two-game win streak snapped.

The Lions, now just two points out of last place in the division, fell behind the Argonauts early at home and never recovered. Quarterbacks Kevin Glenn and John Beck combined to hit 23-of-40 passes for 322 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as well as an interception. Beck, who came on late, registered a one-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, capping a 12-play, 75-yard drive.

Emmanuel Arceneaux caught nine balls for a game-high 119 yards and a major, but his yardage total was completely wiped out by the 13 penalties charged to the Lions, costing the squad 131 yards in field position. Arceneaux has 44 catches on the campaign, good enough for 734 yards (second-best) and seven aerial touchdowns (first).

Currently 3-3 against opponents inside the division, the Lions are being hit with an average of more than 11 penalties per contest, leading to a league- high 1,195 yards through 12 games. Because BC can't seem to cut out some of the questionable moves, the squad is in the bottom third of the league in scoring with just 22.3 ppg.

At the other end of the scoring list is Calgary which is putting up a league- best 28.9 ppg, managing to do so by playing much more disciplined with just 108 fouls for a league-low 968 yards, the only team in the CFL with less than 1,000 penalty yards heading into this week.

As far as the all-time series is concerned, one that recognizes only regular- season meetings back to 1954, Calgary is ahead by a count of 97-80-5, although the Lions are the ones who came out on top in the most recent tussle, 25-24, early last month.

In that contest, British Columbia scored 12 points in the final quarter and outscored host Calgary by a 15-3 margin after intermission. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Kevin Glenn threw a 65-yard major to Ernest Jackson to put the visitors on top.

The Lions have now won two straight and three of the last four encounters with Calgary, although they've also split the last six matchups.

Having revenge as a motivating factor this week should work in favor of the Stamps, but at the same time, BC has already shown that it can get the job done against Calgary and this time around the hosts won't be able to lean on Mitchell. However, what the Stamps will have is running back Jon Cornish back in the lineup, after sitting out the Montreal meeting with various aches and pains.
