CFL Preview - Winnipeg (6-5) at British Columbia (6-4) (ET)

GAME NOTES: The British Columbia Lions have some decisions to make following the loss of quarterback Travis Lulay to a shoulder injury, as they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a West Division showdown at BC Place on Saturday night.

Lulay, who missed time last season due to an injury on the same shoulder, will not be returning to the field any time soon which means the road to the postseason just got a little tougher for the Lions who are currently fourth in the highly-competitive West.

Despite being held to single digits in the scoring column for the third time this year, the Lions still managed to come out on top last week, thanks in large part to the fact that the team was facing off against the expansion Ottawa RedBlacks who are still trying to find their way in 2014. Lulay completed 18-of-27 passes for 167 yards and was sacked twice in the 7-5 road victory. The signal caller also led the way on the ground with a game-high 50 yards, his longest run of 24 yards alone accounting for more than the RedBlacks produced the entire contest (16 yards).

Kicker Paul McCallum.saved the day for BC with a pair of field goals, while Ricky Schmitt chipped in with a 69-yard field goal in the third quarter, accounting for the only points in the second half for either side.

According to the depth chart for last week's game, next in line for the passing responsibilities for the Lions is Kevin Glenn, the original starter this season for BC before the brief return of Lulay. The Illinois State product has thrown for more than 2,100 yards this season, but the former Blue Bomber has more interceptions (11) than touchdowns (nine), which was just part of the reason why he found his spot on the bench once it was determined that Lulay could get back on the field.

As for Winnipeg, the last-place team in the West which with a record of 6-5 would be cruising along in first place if it were part of the East Division, it has lost two in a row and four of the last five following a 30-24 setback against Saskatchewan last weekend.

The Bombers, who coincidentally knocked out quarterback Darian Durant for what could be the remainder of the regular season, followed signal caller Drew Willy who converted 26-of-38 passes for 360 yards and two TDs, but he was also picked off twice and sacked five times. Winnipeg put up 454 yards of total offense, compared to only 303 for the Riders, but the hosts could not get beyond the 13 penalties which cost them 158 yards.

Running back Nic Grigsby, who hit the end zone on a 12-yard run in the first quarter, leads the league in rushing with 623 yards in this his rookie season out of Arizona, but he carried the ball just eight times as he amassed 66 net yards. One of the top scoring threats in the league, Grigsby has now posted majors in four consecutive games, five of the last six, and has eight TDs on the ground overall, not to mention one through the air while adding 39 receptions for another 341 yards.

Winnipeg, which will host the Lions in the third and final meeting between the squads late next month, won the first matchup of 2014 by a score of 23-6 on the road back on July 25. In that contest, Glenn tossed a pair of interceptions and was sacked five times, all while the Lions were being hit with 14 penalties for a loss of 122 yards in front of the hometown crowd.

Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu saved the day for the Blue Bombers as he knocked through all five of his field goal chances and finished with 16 points total for the visitors the first time around this season.

While British Columbia saw its four-game win streak in the series come to an end, the Bombers watched their advantage in the series move to 84-75-2 in games played during the regular season and dating back to 1954.

With the loss of Lulay, the Lions have some of the wind taken out of their sails, but at least they can fall back on Glenn. Then again, Willy is no slouch for the Bombers, when you consider he leads the CFL with 2,889 yards passing, although having almost as many INTs (11) as TDs (12) still leaves some doubt about his decision making ability.
