1st-place Stampeders continue march to history in clash with Alouettes

The Calgary Stampeders were 1-1-1 through their first three games of the 2016 season. Since then, they've won 12 straight, and will seek their 13th victory when the Montreal Alouettes come to town Saturday.

Led by quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, the Stampeders have scored 30 or more points in eight straight games. Mitchell has completed nearly 68 percent of his passes for 4,871 yards and 29 touchdowns, and his favourite targets, Marquay McDaniel and DaVaris Daniels, have combined for 11 scores.

Adding to the Calgary offence is running back Jerome Messam, who leads the league with 1,002 yards and 11 touchdowns on 181 carries.

While the offence gets most of the headlines, the defence has been spectacular, led by defensive lineman Charleston Hughes - the league leader in sacks with 12 - and Jamar Wall, who has four interceptions.

At the other end of the spectrum are the 4-10 Alouettes, who sit last place in the East division as losers of five of the last six. Quarterback Rakeem Cato has been steady the last two games, though, throwing five touchdowns.

Another bright spot for the Alouettes has been their defence, which is ranked second in the league, allowing just 24.7 points per game and tallying 11 interceptions.

The two clubs meet twice in the next three weeks. Should Calgary win its remaining games, it will join the 1989 Edmonton Eskimos as the only teams to win 16 games in CFL history.

The game gets underway at 7 p.m. ET.
