Jay Spencer, a senior at St. John Paul II Catholic High School in Alabama, became the first wrestler in school history to win a state title Saturday.
That accomplishment alone is impressive, but it's even more special for Spencer, who's legally blind.
Spencer was diagnosed with an inherited retinal degenerative disease when he was 3 years old, according to Daniel Boyette of AL.com. Despite his reduced vision, the 160-pounder qualified for three consecutive Alabama High School Athletic Association state tournaments.
After winning the championship, Spencer shared this message with WZDX News: "Don't let what anyone thinks about you change how you think. As long as you believe you can do something, then you can."
