Sharapova defeats Vandeweghe to advance to Wimbledon semifinal
No. 4 Maria Sharapova defeated Coco Vandeweghe in three sets on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals at Wimbledon.
With the 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 victory, Sharapova will make her first semifinal appearance at the tournament since 2006.
After a dominating first set by Sharapova, Vandeweghe cranked up the resistance. Trailing 2-3 in the second, the 23-year-old urged the Centre Court crowd to get loud, pumping the audience up and transferring that energy towards her own play.
It seemingly worked, as she eventually evened the set at 5-all before taking command in the 11th game to go up 6-5.

The momentum didn't last, though, as Sharapova regained control of the match by going up 3-0 in the third set and never looking back.
Sharapova will face the winner of the match between Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka.
