The US Open has the widest variety of winners of all the men's grand slams by far. The tournament has crowned nine different champions since 2009, compared to the Australian Open and French Open with four different winners apiece over that span and Wimbledon with five.
That said, the majority of tennis fans hope to see the top two seeds battle it out for a third time in three months. The two provided fans with a memorable five-setter at Wimbledon that Alcaraz eventually won, then went toe-to-toe in the Western & Southern Open final just over a week ago where Novak Djokovic got the last laugh.
Djokovic and Alcaraz may look destined to meet for another epic clash in the finals, but any of the top players can still win the tournament.
2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev wound up on Alcaraz's side of the draw, as did the winner of the National Bank Open - the ATP 1000 event in Toronto - Jannik Sinner. This half of the draw is clearly tougher as it houses three of the top four favorites. Don't be shocked if Alcaraz gets bounced in the quarters versus Sinner.
Djokovic has an easier path to the championship with a potential quarterfinals match versus Stefanos Tsitsipas and a potential semis tilt against either four-seed Holger Rune or five-seed Casper Ruud, who was the runner-up to Alcaraz last year.
Taylor Fritz is one of the shortest-priced Americans at +50000 but ended up in Djokovic's quadrant of the draw. Frances Tiafoe (+5000), Sebastian Korda (+6600), and Tommy Paul (+10000) join Fritz as hopefuls to become the first American to win the US Open since Andy Roddick did so in 2003.

The women's tournament is always more wide open than the men's since there's no true dominant force in today's game. There are 17 women priced below +5000 heading into Round 1. The men's side has only 10.
Defending champion Swiatek is the favorite at +230. She reached the semifinal in the last two WTA 1000 events but was defeated by the eventual champ in both tournaments - Jessica Pegula in Montreal and Coco Gauff in Cincinnati. These results alone prove Swiatek is vulnerable and isn't a lock to win her fifth grand slam title.
If Gauff (+650) wants to continue her heater and claim her first grand slam, she will likely have to beat Swiatek in the quarterfinals. Gauff became the youngest winner in Cincinnati in the Open era at only 19 years old.
Pegula is another American looking to claim their first grand slam title on home soil. The world No. 3 claimed her second WTA 1000 two tournaments ago but has never reached a semifinal in a grand slam. Pegula avoided Swiatek's side of the draw and should have a straightforward path to the semis but will likely have to take on world No. 2 and two-time US Open semifinalist Aryna Sabalenka if she wants to reach her first final.
