Simona Halep captured her second Rogers Cup title in three years on Sunday with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Sloane Stephens in Montreal.
The No.1 ranked Halep was able to keep her winning streak against No. 3 Stephens alive. Halep also captured her first major at Roland Garros this year by defeating the young American.
After winning the first set in an 8-6 tiebreak, Halep held off a late surge by Stephens to wrap it up in the third set in a match that lasted just over 2 1/2 hours in front of boisterous crowd dotted with Romanian flags.
Halep also won her first Rogers Cup at Stade IGA in Montreal back in 2016, when she defeated American Madison Keys 7-6, 6-3.
