The United States Tennis Association noticed the criticism French Open officials received for not seeding Serena Williams following her return from pregnancy leave.

The US Open will change its approach and seed players who are coming back from a pregnancy, according to David Waldstein of The New York Times.

Katrina Adams, the president of the USTA, doesn't believe players returning from pregnancy should be "penalized" for taking time off to bond with their child and start a family.

“It’s the right thing to do for these mothers that are coming back,” Adams told Waldstein. She added that the US Open would “revise the seedings if pregnancy is a factor in the current rankings of a player.”

Under current Women's Tennis Association rules, players who lose ranking slots after missing time due to injury, pregnancy, or other absences aren't given protected seeding at tour events.
