Maria Sharapova returned with a bang by upsetting No. 2 Simona Halep in her first slam appearance since serving a 15-month doping suspension.
Sharapova qualified as a wild card then upset Halep 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round before breaking down into tears of joy as fans welcomed her back with loud cheers in the friendly confines of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
