Andrea Pirlo warns Italy is 'not Pirlo-dependant'
Despite being considered essential to Italy's success in Brazil, Andrea Pirlo insists the Azzurri aren't dependant on him in order for the team to achieve greatness during the World Cup.
"This national team is not Pirlo-dependant. In order to go all the way you need everyone's contribution," Pirlo stated via FIFA.com.
Italy was drawn into a difficult group (Costa Rica, England, and Uruguay), but the Juventus midfielder insists the group's difficulty won't be used as an excuse for failure.
"Our aim should be to win and go until the end. We have a very competitive team and we will give our all to win this tournament. I never compete to take part but to finish first."
Prior to Italy's first game against England on June 14, Pirlo warned the Azzurri should be cautious about an improved Three Lions squad, one that is different from the 2012 European Championship.
"We know England are a good team, that has improved a lot. They have new young players, who are fast. We will have to be careful. However, we know how to face them. Italy has always played great games against England and hence we will have our chances."
The 35-year-old is coming off an excellent season with Juventus, which saw the Bianconeri win a third consecutive scudetto.
