There's no end to the drama at the 2018 World Cup.

Croatia survived a topsy-turvy quarter-final against Russia that went the distance, a feat of nerves, patience, and fitness that left players, supporters, and social media in a heap.

Ivan Rakitic struck the penalty that sealed a 4-3 shootout win - Croatia's second consecutive victory on spot-kicks at the tournament.

Almost everything happened in the preceding 120 minutes of football. Russia took the lead in the 31st minute thanks to Denis Cheryshev's floating effort, but Croatia responded soon after via Andrej Kramaric.

Domagoj Vida nodded in from a corner in the 101st minute to give the eastern European side the lead, only to see Brazilian-born Mario Fernandes equalise with five minutes remaining in extra time.

Fyodor Smolov and Fernandes each missed their penalties, and Croatia wheeled away in celebration.

Here's how Twitter documented the wild turn of events:

After Smolov's opening miss

After Fernandes' whiff

After Modric's fortunate penalty
