Morocco's Amrabat: U.S. ref asked for Portugal shirt after match
The biggest controversy surrounding Portugal's win over Morocco is not directly related to the result but rather match official Mark Geiger's conduct, as Nordin Amrabat alleges the American attempted to obtain Pepe's jersey.
Geiger had a busy day at the office during a heated affair Wednesday. He attracted plenty of criticism, but none more bizarre than from the Moroccan midfielder.
Amrabat claims Geiger made it known in the first half that he was looking to get his hands on the Portuguese defender's jersey at the end of the match.
"I do not know what he is used to," Amrabat told Dutch television, as translated by Martin Rogers of USA Today. "But he was very impressed with Cristiano Ronaldo and I hear from Pepe that he asked (Ronaldo) in the first half if he could have (Pepe's) shirt.
"What are we talking about? At the World Cup? It’s not a circus here."
FIFA has yet to address the situation concerning the Major League Soccer referee, who was officiating his first match at the 2018 World Cup.
