Mexican fans among 8 injured after taxi strikes pedestrians in Moscow
A taxi driver is under investigation after plowing into eight people, including a pair of Mexican World Cup supporters, in Moscow on Saturday.
Video emerged showing a yellow taxi mounting a sidewalk where unaware pedestrians were struck near Red Square in the Russian capital.
The driver, who is understood to be from Kyrgyzstan, allegedly told police that he fell asleep behind the wheel after being awake for 20 hours, according to the Associated Press.
After the incident, the driver was confronted by witnesses before exiting the taxi and fleeing on foot. He was chased by bystanders, whom he thought would kill him.
It's unclear if the incident will impact security measures in Moscow or any of the other 10 host cities during the World Cup.
The two injured female fans met with representatives from the Mexican Embassy, who told the Associated Press that they did not have to be hospitalised.
