World Cup preview: Is Iceland clapped out after Euro 2016 heroics?
Iceland's elimination of England at Euro 2016 was a joy to behold. While Roy Hodgson's disjointed throng was reduced to hopeful pop shots from afar, everyone's second-favourite team defended in numbers and surged upfield in packs. It was a deserved 2-1 victory for Iceland.
Much of the squad from that tournament is the same for Iceland's inaugural World Cup adventure, but it's worrying that the base of the midfield and defense is beginning to look a little aged. Group D's opener against Argentina could be a tough test for those stationed deeper in Iceland's lineup.
Group stage schedule

Projected starting XI

Although Heimir Hallgrimsson has shown greater tactical versatility since former co-manager Lars Lagerback left the team, Iceland's success has been built on continuity. Nine of this XI started the famous round-of-16 defeat of England in France, and the group is arguably more resolute now due to the inclusion of Udinese's composed veteran, Emil Hallfredsson, in the middle of the park.

Key player: Johann Berg Gudmundsson

Gylfi Sigurdsson has returned to the fold in time for the World Cup following a knee injury, but his difficult season at Everton should see Burnley's Gudmundsson take more responsibility in the Iceland squad. The winger's education under club manager Sean Dyche has improved his game immeasurably, with his delivery from out wide a particular strength.
Breakout star: Hordur Bjorgvin Magnusson

Magnusson's great promise was recognised by Juventus in a 2011 transfer, but he went unused by the Italian giant before being snapped up by Bristol City in 2016. The 25-year-old doesn't start every match for his club - he's second fiddle to the talented Joe Bryan - but his height and ability to play at both left-back and centre-back should appeal to a host of scouts in Russia.
