As the 32 nations taking part in next summer's World Cup learned their respective group stage fates - after sitting through a collection of unnecessary speeches and mildly entertaining musical numbers - those tuning in were treated to some light-hearted moments; exchanges that added colour to what, at its core, is an otherwise banal procedure of former footballers opening plastic balls after picking them from predetermined bowls.

Maradona's bold wardrobe choice

Diego Maradona made the biggest fashion statement during Friday's proceedings in Moscow, opting for a striking yellow bow tie.

The Argentine icon also wore a watch on each wrist, but, seeing as how he always does that when he travels, we'll let it slide.

Lineker's Italy barb

Italy wasn't one of the names to be pulled from the pots on Friday, after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 - you may have heard. Not to worry, though, as the four-time world champion was represented on stage at the Kremlin, with victorious 2006 captain Fabio Cannavaro taking part in the festivities.

Draw host Gary Lineker didn't miss the chance to throw some shade, noting that it was "nice to have Italy involved" in the tournament.
