Lynx not wearing Black Lives Matter shirts vs. Stars
Minnesota Lynx players didn't wear their Black Lives Matter shirts ahead of Tuesday's contest against the Stars at Freeman Coliseum.
Lynx spokeswoman Ashley Carlson confirmed that, in San Antonio, the team wouldn't wear the BLM attire that prompted four off-duty police officers who were working security at the Target Center to walk off the job Saturday.
According to The Associated Press, the Lynx said:
The Lynx organization was made aware about the concerns of the off-duty Minneapolis police officers. While our players message mourned the loss of life due to last week's shootings, we respect the right of those individual officers to express their own beliefs in their own way. ... We continue to urge a constructive discussion about the issues raised by these tragedies.
At their last home game, the Lynx donned warmup shirts with the words ''Change starts with us. Justice & Accountability'' on the front. The back featured the names of the two victims who were fatally shot by police officers last week, as well as the phrase "Black Lives Matters" under the Dallas police shield. At a protest over the deaths, five officers were gunned down.
Minneapolis Police Federation President Bob Kroll told Randy Furst of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune earlier Tuesday that the four officers won't work any more Lynx games.
Minnesota defeated San Antonio 81-57 to improve to 17-4 on the season.
