Canada failed to clinch a spot in Pot 3 for the 2022 World Cup draw after falling 1-0 to Panama in its last CONCACAF qualifying match.

Despite the defeat, Canada ended its memorable qualifying campaign atop the CONCACAF table, edging out Mexico with a superior goal differential.

John Herdman's side needed to beat Panama to boost the odds of landing in a more favorable group ahead of its first World Cup campaign since 1986; Canada will now settle for Pot 4 heading into Friday's draw.

"We got a pass tonight with the U.S. losing, but after 20 matches, we're here, top of the group," Herdman said after Wednesday's game. "And we're off to Qatar as the champions of CONCACAF. That's all we could have dreamed of."

Chances were limited for Canada and Panama during the first half. Both teams struggled to create chances during a cagey opening 45 minutes littered with stoppages due to the physicality shown on either side of the pitch.

Forward Gabriel Torres broke the deadlock moments after halftime. The 33-year-old - who was making his 100th appearance for Panama - delivered a powerful volley into the back of the Canadian net in the 49th minute.

Panama continued to be physical after the impressive strike, picking up five yellow cards in the second half. The home side ended the match with 21 fouls to Canada's 11.

CONCACAF leading scorer Cyle Larin appeared to level the match late, but it was ultimately called back after the forward ventured offside in the buildup to the goal.

Canada's focus will now shift to the group-stage draw in Qatar on Friday before preparations begin for its first World Cup match in November.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar runs from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18.
