Gabriel Jesus joins Manchester City's growing injury list
Gabriel Jesus was removed from the Brazil squad on Friday after the Manchester City attacker suffered an undisclosed injury during Monday's Premier League win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Jesus is expected to miss City's next three matches and Sergio Aguero has been sidelined with a knee injury since June, meaning the only striker with first-team experience at Pep Guardiola's disposal is Liam Delap. The 17-year-old, whose father is former Stoke City midfielder Rory Delap, scored on his debut in Thursday's League Cup victory over Bournemouth.
"(On) Wednesday, the English team contacted the doctor of the Brazilian national team, Rodrigo Lasmar, reporting the athlete's injury detected after the game against Wolverhampton on Monday," a statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation said, with translation from The Guardian's Jamie Jackson.
Guardiola complained during Friday's press conference that he only has 13 senior players to choose from for Monday's visit from in-form Leicester City. The absences of Aguero and Jesus, and the inexperience of Delap, could lead the Spaniard to select a false nine in his strikeforce, with Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden fulfilling that role in the past.
Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo are also among a host of players currently in the treatment room, while Aymeric Laporte and Ilkay Gundogan are recovering after contracting COVID-19.
Jesus was replaced by Hertha Berlin's Matheus Cunha in the Brazil squad.
