5 goal-song ideas for Team North America at the World Cup
The youngest World Cup of Hockey squad is in need of a goal song, and there's no shortage of appropriate tunes.
Team North America asked for help Tuesday night, calling on Twitter followers for suggestions.
The 23-and-under entry would be best paired with a celebratory song that emphasizes its youth, skill, and spirit.
Here's a handful of ideas:
"Forever Young"
It's so hard to get old without a cause
I don't want to perish like a fading horse
Youth's like diamonds in the sun
And diamonds are forever
The 1984 classic from German rock group Alphavillle illustrates Team North America's ethos to a tee. The NHL wants to showcase its young stars, and while neither the tournament nor their youth will last forever, Team North America can use their age - and the perception that it's a detriment - as motivation every time they light the lamp.
If this is too dated, there's always Jay-Z's version, "Young Forever", which draws on the Alphaville sample.
"The Kids Are Alright"
Sometimes, I feel I gotta get away
Bells chime, I know I gotta get away
And I know if I don't, I'll go out of my mind
Better leave her behind with the kids, they're alright
The kids are alright
This song is more upbeat, has a catchy, repetitive chorus, and served as a generational anthem in the '60s.
A team that boasts as many up-and-coming superstars as this one does should have a goal song that reminds us of that.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit"
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
Team North America's teenagers will be the players to watch. Team captain Connor McDavid and forward Jack Eichel will both be 19 years old for the duration of the tournament, as will Auston Matthews once he celebrates his 19th birthday on Saturday.
Nirvana's 1991 smash hit fits the "hockey rock" mold, and even though it was released before all of Team North America's players were born, they don't need to know how to mosh to be uplifted after scoring.
"22"
We're happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time
It's miserable and magical.
Oh, yeah
Tonight's the night when we forget about the deadlines
It's time
We know what you're thinking: "Finally, a song the players actually know."
Taylor Swift's 2013 hit will be especially meaningful for 22-year-olds Jacob Trouba, Morgan Rielly, Ryan Murray, and Matt Murray.
"Wild Horses"
I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let's do some living after we die
Head coach Todd McLellan said Wednesday that his team is "like a group of wild horses," so what better way to run with that assessment than by using the Rolling Stones' 1971 ballad as a goal song?
The North American squad is arguably the fastest team in the tourney, and certainly the most untamed, so there's no doubt it's apropos.
Honorable mentions: Blink182's "What's My Age Again?", Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream," Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen," Triumph's "Magic Power".
