Canada avoided defeat in Mexico for the first time in over 20 years after securing a 1-1 draw in Thursday's World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Azteca.

Mexico looked poised to enter halftime with the advantage following Jorge Sanchez's goal in the 21st minute, but Jonathan Osorio brought the visitors level with a clinical equalizer.

The midfielder's 42nd-minute strike - Canada's first goal at Mexico's most famous stadium since 1980 - eventually led to the home side getting booed off the pitch at halftime.

Match officials briefly halted the contest in the second half due to homophobic chants from the Mexican crowd.

After the restart, Mexico had several chances to score a winner, only to be stifled by an organized Canadian backline.

The result is Canada's first draw in Mexico since 2001 and first competitive away point in the country since 1980.

Canada now moves up to third in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying table ahead of its next qualifier against Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Mexico drops to second after the United States claimed the top spot with a win over Jamaica on Thursday. Gerardo Martino's men take on Honduras next.
