Canada's hopes of ending its Gold Cup drought have been dealt a massive blow as Alphonso Davies will miss the tournament due to an ankle injury, the team announced Friday.
The 20-year-old suffered the knock during training while Canada prepared for its opening match against Martinique on July 11.
He has returned to Bayern Munich to begin his recovery ahead of the 2021-22 Bundesliga campaign.
Davies, who is widely viewed as Canada's top player, was preparing to play in his third Gold Cup. He has four goals and five assists across six international matches in 2021.
Canada won its one and only Gold Cup in 2000, less than a year before Davies was born.
