D.C. United captain Wayne Rooney was reportedly arrested last month for public intoxication and swearing.

The 33-year-old was accused of the misdemeanor offense Dec. 16 and was later released at his own recognizance, according to ABC7's Kevin Connell. Rooney reportedly paid a $25 fine Jan. 4.

A statement from D.C. United read: "We are aware of news reports indicating that Wayne Rooney was arrested in December. We understand the media's interest in this matter but believe this is a private matter for Wayne that D.C. United will handle internally. We have no further comment."

The Independent reports the incident took place at Dulles International Airport in Loudoun County, Va., days after Rooney traveled to an event in Saudi Arabia.

A spokesman for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said: "(Rooney) was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Centre on Dec. 16, 2018, on a charge of public intoxication stemming from an arrest by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police (MWAA). He was later released on a personal recognizance bond."

Rooney received a two-year driving ban in September 2017 after he was arrested in England for drunk driving.

England's all-time record goalscorer joined D.C. in July, transforming the franchise from no-hopers to postseason qualifiers. He amassed 12 goals and seven assists in 21 MLS appearances.
