MLS suspends Whitecaps' Techera 3 games for offensive language

The Vancouver Whitecaps' six-game unbeaten run was halted in dramatic fashion in their last MLS game, and things have just taken another turn for the worse.

The league announced Friday evening it has suspended Uruguayan midfielder Cristian Techera for use of offensive language during that 4-0 defeat to Philadelphia Union on June 23.

A statement from MLS reads: "MLS has a zero-tolerance policy against offensive, discriminatory language at its games, and is committed to creating an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity."

Techera, who has also been hit with an undisclosed fine, will now be unavailable for selection for the Whitecaps' games against the Colorado Rapids on Sunday, Chicago Fire on July 7, and D.C. United on July 14.

In a statement published on Vancouver's website, Techera expressed his remorse over the incident, saying: "I sincerely apologize for using offensive language in our match last Saturday. I am reaching out to the other player involved to apologize. What I said is not an accurate reflection of who I am or my character. I have learned from my mistake and accept all responsibility."

The statement appears to imply his "offensive language" was directed toward a particular opponent.

Techera's absence will be a big loss for the 'Caps. In 12 MLS appearances this season, the 26-year-old has registered six goals and one assist, scoring at a rate of one goal every 127 minutes of action.
