Sergio Ramos broke the record for most international caps among European players by making his 177th appearance for Spain on Saturday.

In starting Spain's Nations League match against Switzerland, Ramos moved clear of former record holder Gianluigi Buffon, who made 176 appearances during his legendary career with Italy.

The Real Madrid captain is now seven caps away from matching the world record currently held by Egypt's Ahmed Hassan, who played 184 games. Ramos, 34, will likely have to wait until Euro 2020 next summer to have a chance at setting a new record.

Ramos earned his first cap in 2005 and played a pivotal role in Spain's European Championship (2008 and 2012) and World Cup (2010) triumphs.
