Report: New York City FC targeting Porto's Iker Casillas
New York City FC has reportedly identified Iker Casillas as its next transfer target.
Entering its second Major League Soccer season, NYCFC is said to be eager to add the former FC Porto netminder and is confident of convincing Casillas to take his talents to the United States, a source told Peter O'Rourke of ESPNFC.
The source added that the club is trying to sign him as quickly as possible, even though Casillas has a year remaining on his contract with the Portuguese side.
Casillas, 34, made the switch to Porto during the summer following his trophy-laden career with Real Madrid.
NYCFC's preference to add one of the world's most famous 'keepers likely stems from its poor defensive record during its inaugural season. While Josh Saunders, who started all but one of the team's league matches, doesn't deserve all the blame, Casillas would surely supplant him in the first team in an effort to improve on NYCFC's goals-against record.
The club allowed a league-worst 58 goals against last season - tied with the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC.
The possible arrival of Casillas in New York would see the Spanish international join a star-studded group of former European superstars with Frank Lampard, David Villa and Andrea Pirlo already in the fold.
