Enner Valencia suffered 'significant' knee injury, will see specialist Monday
The gruesome-looking knee injury Enner Valencia suffered Thursday in the first half of West Ham United's Europa League fixture versus Astra Giurgiu is apparently serious, and the Ecuadorian forward will see a specialist Monday to assess the damage, the club announced.
Friday's statement undoubtedly heightened concern among supporters by referring to the injury as "significant" and echoed manager Slaven Bilic's post-match comments, when he stated: "It doesn't look good."
From the club:
Enner Valencia sustained what initially appears to be a significant injury to his right knee and right ankle during Thursday's UEFA Europa League third qualifying round first leg tie with Astra Giurgiu.
The Ecuador forward will see a specialist consultant at a clinic in central London on Monday morning and an update will be provided following that meeting.
It is too early to put a timescale on how long Enner's recovery and rehabilitation period may be.
Only moments after opening the scoring, Valencia appeared to get his leg caught beneath him as he made a challenge. A stretcher was required to carry the forward off the pitch and he needed oxygen before being replaced by Modibo Maiga.
Bilic's side kicks off its Premier League campaign on Aug. 9 at Arsenal, while the second leg of its Europa League tie versus Astra goes next Thursday.
