Roma confirms €13.4M Cengiz Under signing
From New Rome to Rome proper for Cengiz Under, as the Turkish international attacker joins I Giallorossi from Basaksehir for an initial €13.4-million fee with an additional €1.5 million in performance-related bonuses.
Under leaves Istanbul, or as Constantine the Great dubbed it in 330 AD, "New Rome," to join Roma on a five-year deal, according to a statement Sunday from the Serie A side.
Continuing this summer's trend of innovative and sometimes preposterous ways of unveiling signings, Roma did so with the help of the club's eSports outfit.
Life may imitate art, but football is not a video game, and if Under, 20, is going to cut it at the Stadio Olimpico under new boss Eusebio Di Francesco, the player's adaptability is certain to help.
A versatile player capable of playing in an attacking midfield role or on either flank, Under enjoyed a breakout campaign with the shock second-place Turkish side after plying his trade in the second tier. In 32 league appearances last season, Under bagged seven goals to go with five assists, as a meteoric rise that mirrored that of Basaksehir now takes the four-time capped international to Italy's top flight.
"I'm delighted to be here and very excited about meeting the fans," Under said. "My aim is to earn myself a regular starting berth as quickly as possible."
