Frankie Edgar tells Conor McGregor to 'stick around' at featherweight

Frankie Edgar is tired of being told he's not the guy.

Twice Saturday, he thought he was going to find out he'd share the Octagon with featherweight champ Conor McGregor. Twice he was mistaken.

Now, McGregor is toying with the idea of moving up to lightweight, which would cause Edgar to miss yet another opportunity at glory despite being promised the next title shot.

"Stick around, man," Edgar told MMAjunkie. "One more go at it. I know people on Twitter are saying I could beat him. Let him prove them wrong."

McGregor reached superstar status after knocking out Jose Aldo 13 seconds into UFC 194's main event, handing Aldo his first loss in 10 years. Edgar was ringside, and began walking up the steps only to hear that maybe he wasn't next in line.

Commissioner Dana White, who had promised him a title shot, said, "We have to wait to see what Conor does."

Edgar stuck around for the UFC 194 press conference, but after failing to see White and McGregor there, he left. As it turned out, the champ held his own press conference a half-hour later.

"I stuck around and left at the wrong time," Edgar said. "For sure, (I wish I'd stuck around). Maybe me being there would have caused him to … try to sell another fight."

Instead, McGregor went on selling himself, insisting that he can and will hold two belts, at featherweight and lightweight. McGregor's coach John Kavanagh predicts his plan is to move up a weight class for March or April, then come back down to take on Edgar.

For one party, that plan doesn't work.

"He wants to do both, but I think he needs to fight me first," Edgar said. "I'm his toughest challenge. I think a lot of people know that. I just want my opportunity."
