Carter-Williams decides not to wear Rose's number for Bulls
Michael Carter-Williams' run as the new No. 1 in The Windy City didn't last very long.
Shortly after his trade from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Tony Snell became official Monday, the former NBA Rookie of the Year revealed he would wear No. 1 with his new team, as it was a number he had success with as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers.
The digit was previously worn in Chicago by point guard and hometown boy Derrick Rose, who was traded to the New York Knicks over the summer after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the organization.
Carter-Williams changed course following the team's 108-104 overtime preseason loss to the Charlotte Hornets, telling CSN Chicago's Cody Westerlund afterward that he would wear No. 7 instead.
Prior to tipoff, the 25-year-old floor general made it clear that his decision to choose No. 1 wasn't meant as a slight to Rose.
"I’ve been No. 1 a lot," Carter-Williams said. "The discussion is probably going to be about D-Rose, that was his old number. It has nothing to do with D-Rose, who was great for this city. He’s an excellent player. I’m not trying to step on anyone’s toes or anyone’s boundaries. It’s a number I like.
"They asked me what number I wanted. I said one. There wasn’t too much discussion. I know this organization respects Derrick Rose. Like I said, it has nothing to do with stepping on anyone’s toes or anything like that. He was a great player. He did a lot for the city."
