Ronaldo plans to stay at Al-Nassr after discussions with CWC teams
Cristiano Ronaldo says he's likely to sign a new contract with Al-Nassr, seemingly putting an end to transfer speculation that both he and FIFA president Gianni Infantino fueled in recent weeks.
The veteran forward's current deal with the Saudi Arabian club expires June 30. Negotiations over a new contract are reportedly underway.
Asked about his future following Portugal's shootout win over Spain in Sunday's Nations League final, the 40-year-old said "practically nothing is going to change." Prompted specifically with Al-Nassr, he replied, "yes."
Those comments followed his admission prior to Sunday's match that he wouldn't go to the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States. Ronaldo said multiple teams reached out to him but added "you can't try and do everything."
FIFA president Infantino sparked widespread speculation in May when he said that "discussions" were underway for Ronaldo to play in the revamped Club World Cup this summer, which would've required him to leave Al-Nassr. The Saudi side, which he joined in 2022, didn't qualify for the tournament.
Ronaldo himself seemed to suggest last month that a move could be on the cards. Following Al-Nassr's final match of the season, he said on social media "this chapter is over," adding that his story is "still being written."
But after much conjecture, it appears he's going to remain with the Riyadh-based outfit.
Ronaldo lifted his third international trophy Sunday when Portugal won the Nations League. His second-half goal, his record-extending 138th for his country, tied the match at 2-2 before Portugal went on to win the shootout.
