Patrick, the post whisperer

Patrick Roy truly believed his goalposts were his best friends. The 11-time All-Star asked the iron for help ahead of every contest; a ritual that Roy said began during the 1986 playoffs. Three Vezina Trophies and four Stanley Cups may provide some merit to Roy's kooky pre-game practice.

Every goalie needs a superstition. The goalposts are always with me. They talk back to me. Some nights, they say 'bing.' But some nights, they have a bad night.

Last man off

What happens when two opposing, superstitious players both want to be the last skater off the ice following warmup? Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele and Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin like to settle their standoffs with a good ol' fashioned game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.

The Great Diet

Who'd have guessed that the secret to becoming the world's greatest hockey player was guzzling back soda? Apparently, energy drinks weren't available during Wayne Gretzky's prime years, so he'd rely on Diet Coke and sugary treats to get him fueled ahead of games.

We didn't have Gatorade or Powerade or energy drinks, so for me, I drank diet coke ... and we had chocolate bars. We didn't have PowerBars.

Crosby's winning tale

Sidney Crosby is well-known for his quirky pre-game tendencies. Prior to one contest during the 2012-13 season, ex-Penguins teammate Joe Vitale played Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days are Over." Crosby told Vitale that the song reminded him of a recent trip to Italy. šŸ‘‰

Cue superstitious Sid

Crosby tallied a pair of assists in the Penguins' victory, so Vitale played the same song before the next game. Crosby again approached him and repeated the story. Pittsburgh went on a 15-game winning streak, and each time Crosby retold his Italian tale.

Every game I had to act like I’d never heard this freaking story before.
