Champions League, Europa League finals postponed to later dates

UEFA announced Monday it's rescheduling the Champions League, Europa League, and Women's Champions League finals - all of which were set to take place in May - due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"No decision has yet been made on rearranged dates," UEFA said in a statement.

UEFA suspended its club competitions on March 15, freezing the Champions League and Europa League in the round of 16. It's unclear when the remainder of those matches - including second-leg fixtures between Napoli and Barcelona, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid, and Juventus and Lyon - will be played.

Several days later, UEFA and all 55 of its member associations agreed to delay Euro 2020 by a year.

Officials hope to conclude all domestic and European club competitions by the end of June.

UEFA could introduce a mini-tournament to bring a quicker end to the Champions League and Europa League seasons. To cut down on travel, organizers are reportedly considering reducing the quarterfinals and semifinals from two-legged ties to one-off games in central locations.

The rapidly spreading coronavirus has forced several European nations into lockdown, including Italy, Spain, and France. More countries are introducing draconian measures to keep citizens at home by grounding flights, shuttering non-essential businesses, and closing off parks and other public meeting places. Italy alone has recorded more than 60,000 cases and 6,000 deaths over the past few weeks.
