Internazionale defeated AC Milan 3-2 at the San Siro on Sunday by way of a hat trick scored by Mauro Icardi, his third and final goal coming from the penalty spot in the 90th minute of play to secure all three points in the Derby della Madonnina.

Icardi - who opened the scoring with a smart tap-in off an Antonio Candreva cross and restored the advantage at 2-1 with an acrobatic touch in the box - celebrated his match-winning goal by lifting his shirt to the "Curva Nord" a la Lionel Messi, displaying his name and number for the Inter faithful to cheer.

It served as a cruel end to the performance of Vincenzo Montella's Milan, who twice battled back with second-half goals by Suso and Giacomo Bonaventura. But that effort was thwarted late on as Ricardo Rodriguez dragged Danilo D'Ambrosio down in the box with a few minutes left on the clock.

For Icardi, a three-goal performance - the first hat trick scored in this rivalry since Diego Milito's back in 2012 - was rewarded equally in points toward the Serie A table. Inter now sits second in the league at 22 points, two behind leader Napoli and well clear of 10th-placed Milan at 12 points.

The two Milanese outfits meet again on March 4, 2018.
