Dzeko pips Mertens, Belotti to capture Serie A scoring crown

Edin Dzeko's rebirth is complete.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina striker rebounded from a profligate first season with Roma to emerge as Serie A's top scorer in 2016-17.

Converting a personal-record 29 times, Dzeko bettered Dries Mertens' 28 tallies for Napoli and Andrea Belotti's 26 strikes for Torino. Mauro Icardi and Gonzalo Higuain tied for fourth with 24 goals scored.

Upon his arrival in Serie A in 2015, the former Manchester City poacher made more headlines for his near misses than his match-winning ability. He converted just eight Serie A goals during his first campaign in the Italian top flight.

Dzeko's fortune changed over the past nine months as he became more active in the penalty area. Only Lionel Messi fired more shots than Dzeko's 177 attempts since the end of August, and even then the Argentine managed to register just two more than his European Golden Shoe rival.

Nineteen of Dzeko's strikes came off his right foot, seven off his left, two off his head, and Sunday's effort against Genoa came off his mid-section.

Dzeko also set the club's single-season record with 39 goals across all competitions.
