ROME - After serving as assistant to the past three Empoli FC coaches, Giovanni Martusciello was unveiled as the new head coach of the Italian top-flight outfit on Thursday.
The 44-year-old has been on the coaching staff for 10 years, but this will be his first stint in the hot seat as he seeks to build on a 10th-place Serie A finish.
He takes over from Marco Giampaolo, who left the club after just one season in charge.
As a midfielder Martusciello helped Empoli gain promotion from the third tier in 1996 and from the second tier a year later.
