Uruguay's exit from the World Cup could pave the way for Arsenal to complete its summer shopping spree next week.

The club has appeared to be close to finalising a move for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira for the better part of a month, but the north London outfit has been unable to complete the signing while the 22-year-old was representing Uruguay at the World Cup in Russia.

Shortly after La Celeste was knocked out of the tournament by France on Friday, David Ornstein of BBC Sport reported that Arsenal is confident that a deal for the deep-lying midfielder will be completed next week.

The announcement will be dependent on a medical, and whether Torreira travels to England from Russia or if he elects to travel back to Uruguay before completing a transfer that will reportedly cost Arsenal £25 million.

He'll also have to put pen to paper on a long-term deal before the transfer can be announced.

Torreira made five appearances during Uruguay's World Cup campaign after a season in which he featured in 36 matches and scored four goals in Serie A.

Arsenal is expected to recruit at least one more young player, but it's believed that there won't be any further first-team signings before the summer transfer window closes.

The club has completed a trio of signings since new manager Unai Emery took charge in May, including deals for Stephan Lichtsteiner (on a free transfer from Juventus), Bernd Leno, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos - with the latter two reportedly costing £19 million and £17.6 million, respectively.
