American player deemed too tall for Korean Basketball League
David Simon has spent the past two years playing for Anyang KGC of the Korean Basketball League (KBL), but a new rule is forcing him to continue his career elsewhere next season.
The KBL decided last month to limit the number of foreign players per team to just two, according to Jung Min-ho of the Korea Times. Furthermore, foreign players cannot be taller than two meters (6.56 feet), which means Simon, at 6-foot-8, is now too tall to play in the league.
The KBL believes the new height restrictions will encourage teams to seek out players with better speed and skills rather than "just tall ones."
Simon, a 35-year-old center from Chicago, led the KBL with 25.68 points per game during the 2017-18 season. He has also played professionally in Bulgaria, France, Serbia, and Kazakhstan.
"Personally, I don't really understand (the rule)," Simon told BBC OS. "Just from the fact that there are only two or three of us that were even over the limit, and then two of us are right there. The tallest guy, Rod Benson, he was well over the limit, but besides that, most of the guys there aren't super small, or there isn't that much a difference in their skills."
Simon said he hasn't decided where he'll play next, but thinks he still has three or four years left in him.
