Bayern Munich falls short of club record in Hertha stalemate

Bayern Munich failed to break a club record Saturday with a stalemate against Hertha Berlin, as Jupp Heynckes' side fell just short of surpassing a 14-match winning run previously set some 38 years ago.

The Bavarians squandered a chance at an unprecedented 15th-straight victory in all competitions after a frustrating 0-0 draw at the Allianz Arena, and though Heynckes' side now sits 20 points above Borussia Dortmund in the table, the team will need to win nearly every single match remaining in its 2017-18 campaign to contest this record again this season.

The previous mark was set in the 1980-81 season through September and October of 1980, when Bayern was led by manager Pal Csernai. The club defeated Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB Pokal to kick off the streak, then won nine straight Bundesliga matches, another DFB Pokal clash, and three European Cup matches - twice against Olympiacos, once versus Ajax.

Bayern equalled that 14-match record with a win over Besiktas this week, which capped a run that also saw the team defeat Paris Saint-Germain and pick up two victories in the DFB Pokal along with 10 consecutive league wins.

The latest streak was a result of the strong upturn in form Bayern experienced after Heynckes stepped in to replace Carlo Ancelotti as manager. The club has lost just one match under the tutelage of the 72-year-old - a 2-1 defeat against Borussia Monchengladbach last November.

Bayern will also no longer be able to surpass its league-only record of 19 consecutive Bundesliga wins - set by Pep Guardiola in the 2013-14 season between Oct. 19, 2013 and March 25, 2014 - as there are only 11 league matches remaining this season.
