Davis remains committed to Pelicans, doesn't plan on asking for trade

Anthony Davis is the face of the New Orleans Pelicans, and as long as he's under contract, no matter how dire things may get, the All-Star forward doesn't intend on suiting up for anyone else.

"I'm here until 2021, and then I'll make a decision from there," Davis told The Advocate's Scott Kushner. "I don't plan on leaving in the next couple of years or anything like that. I've always said I wanted to be here and that's still true."

The Pelicans have qualified for the postseason just once (45-37 in 2014-15) since Davis' arrival as the first overall pick in the 2012 draft. They currently have a loose grip on the eighth seed in the Western Conference with a 31-26 record, a half-game better than the 30-26 Los Angeles Clippers entering Thursday night's action.

Should New Orleans hold on to a playoff spot, a likely first-round meeting with either the Houston Rockets or Golden State Warriors doesn't bode well for their chances of advancing forward, especially considering that DeMarcus Cousins is sidelined with a season-ending Achilles injury.

Being a part of a depleted roster that's missing key players is something Davis is all too familiar with.

"We have taken steps to be a winning franchise. We have just been hit with the injury bug every year since I've been here so we can't see our full potential," Davis added. "We know where we could've been if we had those guys. But we don't. We have to keep playing.

"You have to take it year by year. I don't go into any year saying I don't want to be here or nothing like that. Of course at some point you want to win. I feel like we are trying to get the right pieces around here."

His five-year extension worth approximately $145 million kicked in at the beginning of last season. He's earning $23.7 million this campaign, with his deal maxing out at $28.7 million in 2020-21.

Davis currently ranks third in the Association in scoring (27.4), eighth in rebounding (10.7), second in rejections (2.1), and 14th in field-goal percentage (54.1).
